Weather update: Severe conditions predicted for Thursday

The Saws issued three alerts for severe weather conditions across parts of the country. Here's what you need to know.


The South African Weather (Saws) has warned of severe thunderstorms, accumulated rainfall and flooding across parts of the country from Thursday.

Here is a breakdown of the alerts issued:

Weather update: 30 September

Severe conditions expected

The Saws said thunderstorms were expected across the central interior of South Africa, while rainy conditions are expected along the south-eastern coastal regions.

Yellow L2: Thunderstorms in central regions

A yellow level 2 warning was issued for severe thunderstorms over the western half of both the North West and Free State provinces.

These conditions will also affect the extreme eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the north-eastern interior of the Eastern Cape.

These conditions will persist into Thursday evening, and the likelihood of damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours remain high.

Yellow L4: Rain in KZN, FS, EC

Meanwhile, a yellow level 4 warning was issued for rain across the western and southern regions of KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning also extends to the eastern regions of the Free State and the eastern regions of the Eastern Cape. These conditions will persist into Thursday evening as well.

Yellow L1: Strong winds in the WC

Finally, a yellow level 1 alert was issued for strong winds across the coastal regions of the Western Cape.
