Heatwave Alert: persistently high temperatures expected in Gauteng on Wednesday

Here's what to expect on Wednesday.


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heatwave warning as it expects persistently high temperatures in Gauteng and the eastern parts of North West until Friday.

While other parts of the country can expect fine and warm weather, some areas in the Northern Cape will see hot conditions.

In Mpumalanga and Limpopo, drizzle is predicted along the escarpment in the morning.

Wednesday’s weather forecast

Gauteng:

  • Expect fine and hot conditions.
  • The UVB sunburn index is rated as “Extreme.”

Mpumalanga:

  • Cloudy in the east with morning fog and drizzle along the escarpment.
  • Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm.

Limpopo:

  • Like Mpumalanga, Limpopo will also see some cloudiness in the east with morning fog and drizzle along the escarpment.
  • Inland areas will experience partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions, but it will be hot to very hot in the southwest.

North-West Province weather:

  • Look for fine and hot to very hot conditions in this region.

Free State weather:

  • Morning fog in the east, but otherwise fine and warm to hot throughout the day.

Northern Cape weather:

  • Expect fine and warm to hot conditions, with very hot weather in the northwest.
  • Coastal areas will experience a fresh south-westerly wind.

Western Cape weather:

  • Cloudy to partly cloudy in the east in the morning, becoming fine and cool to warm.
  • Coastal winds will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly along the west coast.

Eastern Cape weather:

  • In the western half of the Eastern Cape, expect partly cloudy and warm conditions, with some cooler spots along the coast.
  • The coastal wind will be moderate south-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly in the evening.
  • In the eastern half of the Eastern Cape, it will be partly cloudy with some fog patches in places south of the escarpment, otherwise fine and cool.
  • Coastal areas will experience moderate south-westerly winds at first, then they will shift to south-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh north-easterly from late afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal weather:

  • Morning fog will be present over the interior.
  • Otherwise, expect partly cloudy and cool conditions.
  • Coastal winds will be moderate south-westerly, becoming south-easterly.
