UPDATE: AfriForum catches one of 20 escaped prisoners

The suspect was discovered on the roof of a flat and was rearrested.

AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch has apprehended one of the 20 suspects who escaped custody recently.

The suspects escaped when the police truck they were transported in from Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court to Johannesburg Central Prison was ambushed on August 22, Alberton Record reported.

A manhunt for the suspects was launched, and at the time of publishing, six were apprehended and put back behind bars.

On Wednesday, AfriForum, with the help of the SAPS, SS Crime Alert and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s SWAT unit, apprehended Roland Barnard, one of the escapees.

On Tuesday, when the police released names and photographs of suspects, AfriForum were made aware by SS Crime Alert where the suspect was.

AfriForum went to the scene, and upon arrival of the EMPD SWAT Unit, searched the block of flats in the south of Johannesburg.

Barnard was discovered on the roof of one of the flats, and was rearrested.

“This is an excellent example of how successful emergency services and law enforcement can be when they all strive for one goal,” said Louis van Aswegen, chairperson for AfriForum’s Alberton branch of the neighborhood watch.

“We would just like to thank everyone involved in making this arrest possible,” he added.
