Stones and bricks in MC Roode cause concern
Local authorities are currently looking into the situation.
For the past two weeks stones and bricks have been left in the road in MC Roode drive at night.
This dangerous situation has left residents of Potchefstroom concerned not only for their safety but also worried about damages to vehicles.
Leandro de Beer from Potchefstroom First Responders says that a vehicle has been damaged in the last couple of weeks due to the stones being left in the road.
“We were not yet able to determine if it is individuals looking for trouble or children that are up to mischief. It seems less likely that it is children as the area is very dark at night.”
Local authorities are currently looking into the situation.
De Beer goes on to warm drivers to be vigilant at night and give a few tips on how to stay safe.
- When driving, always remain vigilant and be alert for any individuals on bridges or near road barriers. Pay close attention to the road and watch for objects that could be dangerous, such as rocks, stones or bottles. If you spot something suspicious, reduce your speed and, if possible, safely change lanes.
- If you have passengers in your car, ask them to stay alert and help you keep an eye out for unusual activity or objects on the road.
- Always observe the behaviour of other drivers, as their actions may provide early warnings of potential road hazards, helping you to avoid danger sooner.
- Hijackings and spike / rock placement attacks are more common at night due to reduced visibility and quieter roads. Whenever possible, avoid driving at night, as this is when you’re most likely to become a target.
- Research areas known for known attacks and avoid these hotspots, especially during times of low traffic and at night, when attacks are more likely to occur.
- If you encounter suspicious activity or objects on the road, continue driving without stopping. However, be sure to report the situation to the police as soon as you can. While it may be tempting to remove objects from the road, remember that criminals may be watching, and stopping could put you at further risk.
- In areas known for rock placements on the roadway, reduce your speed significantly. This will give you more time to spot potential hazards and avoid danger safely.
- If you drive over a rock, stay calm and continue driving slowly. Turn on your hazard lights and head toward a safe location, such as a well-lit garage. Avoid stopping near bridges if possible. If you can’t continue driving, pull over in a well-lit area.
- Do not exit your vehicle to assess the damage. Instead, contact the police and emergency services immediately. Inform your loved ones of your location and keep them updated until help arrives. It is essential to remain alert while driving.
