NWU hosts youth finance event

A powerful lineup of speakers and panellists shared insights and tools for success.

The Momentum Youth Dialogues, took place at the North West University, Potchefstroom Campus, on July 30. The aims was to equip young people with the skills of knowledge and behaviours that allow them to make informed decisions regarding money and ensuring that they are financial literate. This event is targeted young people who are currently studying ICT, Accounting, Actuarial Science and Engineering, however it remained open to all young South Africans eager to secure their financial futures.

Hosted by Momentum Group Limited, a leading financial services provider, this third edition of the Youth Dialogue sought to localise financial education by speaking directly to the realities of youth. With the theme Advice Meets Your Context: Secure Your Financial Future, the dialogues addressed the financial challenges and aspirations of South Africa’s youth, encouraging a shift from short-term survival strategies to long-term financial planning.

This year’s programme included conversations exploring the intersections between financial literacy and mental health, entrepreneurship, and employment transitions. It also provided a platform for youth to express their views, challenges, and ideas on how to improve their financial well-being.

A key goal of the 2025 youth dialogue was to shift the narrative from preparing for the job market to a more holistic, future-focused mindset. The event challenged young people to ask themselves not only “Am I ready to work?” but “How will I sustain myself?” This shift encouraged attendees to think beyond job-seeking, and instead embrace financial independence, resilience, and entrepreneurial thinking as critical components of long-term success.

The Dialogue was hosted by celebrated media personality, Melody Miya, who returned for his third consecutive year as MC. Miya, known for his engaging style and deep connection with young audiences, guided discussions and interactions throughout the day.

A powerful lineup of speakers and panellists shared insights and tools for success, including Leonie O’Connell, Momentum Financial Adviser; Ntombizamasala Hlophe, Momentum Corporate Chief Marketing Officer; A representative from National Youth Development Agency (NYDA); A representative from National Skills Fund, among others.

“We are facing a national crisis of financially underprepared youth. According to the Momentum | Unisa Household Financial Wellness Index, only 20% of South African graduates and postgraduates are financially literate. Even more alarming, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority reports that 50% of graduates avoid engaging with financial matters altogether. Academic qualifications alone are not enough to equip young people to manage their money or plan for their futures. That’s why initiatives like the Momentum Youth Dialogues are so critical, we are creating spaces where advice meets real-life context, and where young people can gain the confidence, tools, and mindset they need to take control of their financial journeys. If we want a financially resilient generation, we must start by meeting them where they are and showing them what’s possible,” said Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Youth Employment Portfolio Head at Momentum Group Limited.
