Lucas Seane, a municipal worker who has been described as a kind, respectful, and hardworking father, was stabbed in the heart and in the ear. He was the father of the ex-girlfriend of the accused. According to the family spokesperson, Ephraim Mabilo, Seane succumbed to the injuries on the way to the hospital while being transported by a family friend. “To add to the atrocity, the accused also burned down the shack and the RDP house that housed eleven family members leaving the poor family destitute. All the family’s belonging including clothes; food, school uniform, beds, fridge, TV, and other furniture were destroyed in the fire”, he said.
Mabilo says the dreadful incident happened on Monday when the 31-year-old accused gained entry to the yard housing eleven family members, demanding to see his ex-girlfriend. The ex-girlfriend ended the relationship 3 months ago because the accused was abusive. He could not accept that the relationship was over. The two also have an 8-month-old baby boy. According to one of the family members who did not want to be named, Seane tried to intervene and battled with the accused. His other daughter also helped her dad overpower the man who had 3 knives on him. When she turned away to tend to one of the children, the accused stabbed Seane. The daughter tried to assist her dad but slipped in a pool of her father’s blood. The accused then went on to the RDP house and set it alight using paraffin and ended with the shack.
A two-year-old baby boy almost lost his life while trapped in the blaze. According to a family member, she found the baby on the bed that was already on fire. She quickly grabbed the baby and ran outside and sustained burns to her shoulder in the process.
The family currently live and eat at family friends and nearby neighbours. All they have left are the clothes they were wearing on that fateful night. Mabilo says they live in fear and will be relieved if the suspect is arrested soon.
Ward 13 Councillor, Thabo Melamu who visited the family says he has assisted with food and is organising blankets.
“We are going to build a temporary structure (shack) to house the family until another RDP house can be built. We ask the community and business people to please assist with anything, including school uniforms for the children”, he said.
