Police intervenes at Tlokwe by-election voting station – DA again pleads for free and fair elections
DA Tlokwe by-election campaign manager Chris Hattingh says the DA once again call upon the community of Tlokwe and all opposition parties to help ensure free and fair by-elections.
DA Tlokwe by-election campaign manager Chris Hattingh says the DA once again call upon the community of Tlokwe and all opposition parties to help ensure free and fair by-elections.
According to the DA press statement, “by midday today, 23 February, the police had to intervene after more than 20 unidentified community members disrupted special voting procedures in Ward 4 at the vicinity of the Old Apostolic Church in Ikageng. This is one of the voting stations in Ward 4, which is expected to be the most contested ward. Both DA members and the Independent party agent were threatened while special votes were taking place at houses in the vicinity of the station. They were also forced to delete pictures that they shot with their cell phones.”
“IEC staff left to meet up with the police when the argument got heated and the independent party agent was assaulted. The DA condemns any violence and intimidation tactics used during the electoral process. The police intervened and escorted everybody back into the voting area,” Hattingh explained.
Tomorrow, by-elections will take place in seven wards in Tlokwe. Hattingh says the “DA demands a free and fair election where voters can vote without intimidation, violence or fear.”
