Man and three teens arrested for public violence in Ventersdorp

Four people have been arrested for public violence that included the torching of Phiri Secondary School in Boikhutso, Venterdorp, last Tuesday.

Four people have been arrested for public violence that included the torching of Phiri Secondary School in Boikhutso, Venterdorp, last Tuesday.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Lt-Col Adéle Myburgh, the Ventersdorp Police arrested Obakeng Witbooi (21), Obakeng Maritsi (18), a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old. One of the suspects is still a school learner.
‘The suspects are currently out on bail and will appear before the Ventersdorp Magistrates’ court again on 26 October 2017,’ she reported.
The Ventersdorp Community Policing Forum (CPF) handed the suspects over to the police last Tuesday, soon after the Phiri Secondary School was allegedly torched.
The ANC provincial secretary, Dakota Legoete, says the ANC condemns in the strongest possible terms the violent protests and damage to property in the province.
‘We are concerned about the torching of the Phiri Secondary School and Tshedimosetso Multipurpose Community Centre building in Boikhutso Village near Ventersdorp by people who are apparently not even learners at that particular school.
‘We urge law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in bringing the situation under control and arresting the perpetrators.
We caution our communities not to allow thugs to aggravate the situation because the ANC government will attend to the genuine service delivery issues.
‘We humbly request all our communities to refrain from these hostilities and to create an environment conducive to progressive engagement with their government. We, therefore, call on the provincial government to intervene, where possible, and assist in remedying the situation as soon as possible,’ he said.
