Following the massive protest led by Ikageng and Mohadin residents since this morning (22 February), Police spokesperson, Captain Aafje Botma has confirmed that all roads are open and trucks have been removed however, the situation remains tense. “There are currently only a few protesters still gathered at the taxi rank; however POP are monitoring the scene,” she confirmed.
WATCH: N12 CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO PROTEST

Since early this morning (22 February) residents embarked on a strike and used taxis and trucks to block the N12 forcing motorists to make use of alternative routes. Community members are disgruntled because of service delivery issues and lack of water in Mohadin.

The group consisted of approximately 500 community members who feel they have had enough. According to Botma during the course of the day, the Director of public safety, Mr Masibi as well as MMCs from JB Marks attended the scene in efforts to calm down the situation, however protestors insisted on communicating directly to the executive mayor.

After some time, the mayor arrived and addressed the community. According to a protestor who asked to remain anonymous, the mayor said he cannot promise residents that the water crisis will be resolved anytime soon. “ We just want the services that we pay for,” she lamented.
The residents have arranged a meeting with the mayor which will take place tomorrow afternoon (23 February) at the Mohadin community hall. Residents seek to find out what the cause for the water crisis is and how the municipality intends on resolving the issue.
