Sewage in Sonderwater remains unresolved

Since January last year, residents of Extension 12 in Sonderwater have had to live with a never-ending sewage problem.

According to one resident who asked not to be named, municipal workers come to inspect the sewage regularly, but the problem is never solved. “They come every other week but can never tell us what the problem is,” he said. The resident explained that while the sewage does not seem to be an urgent problem, it overflows the most in the late afternoon when people return from work.

“You should see what it’s like here at this time of day. The smell gets so intense you can barely breathe,” he lamented. “I am concerned for my neighbour, who recently gave birth. This sewage is a safety hazard for the baby.”

The sewage is also right next to a communal tap, which affects residents. “It’s unavoidable because we must come here to get water every day. Sometimes, the smell is so bad that it often tastes like the water from the tap is contaminated,” another resident lamented.

The sewage is directly next to a communal tap.

The resident pleads with the municipality to find the issue and inform the community of what the issue is. The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received none by the time of print
