Driving schools convene to discuss formalisation

Driving Schools will need to be registered as a business with the CIPC, be tax-compliant and have an office where inspections can take place.

The North West branch of the South African Driving Schools Operating Association (SADSOA) hosted their Quarterly provincial meeting on Friday, 18 August to discuss pertinent issues regarding the formalisation of the driving school industry. Numerous driving school operators in the North West province joined for this event that was held at Lotlametswe Guest House in Dassierand.

According to the provincial secretary of SADSOA, Lucas Morake this formalisation of the industry is long overdue to ensure that driving schools are properly regulated.

“The Bill has been through all the stages necessary to be signed by the president. Everything is currently being finalised through the Department of Transport. We have always welcomed this,” adds Morake. Driving Schools will need to be registered as a business with the CIPC, be tax-compliant and have an office where inspections can take place. Instructors will have to be trained and graded dependent on the various vehicle classes.

“There are bad elements in our industry. In terms of ethics this regulation is really important as our industry can regain a better image in the eyes of the public. The problem is that there has not been a formal channel between driving schools and provincial/national governments in order to prosecute offenders who take clients for rides with empty promise,” he added.
