Potch’s hidden hatch a mystery beneath the old train station

An investigation reveals a hidden underground space beneath Potchefstroom's old train station, filled with debris, dirt, and mysterious bags. Local authorities remain silent on the discovery.

Residents of Potchefstroom were left questioning the mysterious underground building beneath the old train station after an investigation by a Herald journalist revealed that the space has been filled with dirt, water, and large stuffed-up bags. This discovery has sparked concern, but local authorities are either unaware or unwilling to comment on the situation.

The investigation, which began earlier last week, uncovered a hidden room under the station that has remained largely out of sight from the public for years. What the investigation uncovered was disturbing — an area reportedly crammed with debris, dirt, and stagnant water. The bags stuffed in the space remain a mystery, and their contents are still unknown. Local security guard, Alton Bungi, suggested that there could be anything under the water in the building.

Madra de Bruin, a member of the DA (Democratic Alliance) council, spoke about the situation, suggesting it should not come as a surprise to residents. “I’ve already recommended that Transnet should sell the old train station to private owners, as the condition has been like this for a long time,” De Bruin said. Her comments reflect ongoing concerns about the dilapidated state of the station, which has been neglected for years.

The JB Marks Municipality was contacted by the Herald, but their response was dismissive. They claimed that the building did not belong to them, but rather to Transnet, and that whatever was happening beneath the structure was not their responsibility. Attempts to get further comment from Transnet on the matter were unsuccessful, with the state-owned company failing to respond to media inquiries.
