NWU Pukke doubled their Varsity Football advantage with a second win on the trot against Wits 1-0 at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds tonight.
The solitary goal was thanks to midfield general Katlego Sephakwe who scored the winner in the first half. His excellent play also earned him the FNB Man of the Match and the Samsung Super Striker award.
The light now shines brighter than ever for Michael Seleka’s men who are now on top of the Varsity Football standings with six points from three matches.

The newcomers to Varsity Football played terrific attacking football as they utilised the wings perfectly with Kagiso Pitso being a menace all night long on the left wing.

Both sides were evenly matched in the first few minutes as they felt each other out in both defence and attack.

NWU-Pukke had the initial opportunity to open the scoring but Gontse Pitso hit his shot over the bar when it seemed much easier to score.

This seemed to calm the nerves as Pukke showed their class with a number of flowing midfield moves which had the Wits defence on their toes.

Wits’ Mahle Mtabane had an opportunity to put pressure on the home side with a free-kick but is was well saved by crowd favourite, Mojalefa “MJ” Magabe.

The atmosphere at the stadium further added to NWU Pukke’s momentum as the packed grandstand saw students and football lovers cheer on their beloved Pukke with chanting, singing and dancing.

The second half saw the same pattern continuing with both sides having possession but losing it in critical stages. Pukke were also guilty of spurning numerous chances in front of goal, either through lackluster finishing or brilliant shot stopping from Wits’ keeper, Brylon Petersen.

The lights even went off for a short while which halted the match for a few minutes. It was also a blessing in disguise as both teams could regroup for the final 15 minutes.
Pukke could have easily walked away with a 3-0 victory as they should have added two more goals with Patrick Lebitsa narrowing missing with a header in the final minutes.

They eventually came away with a well deserved win in their first home match.
