Varsity Football is alive and well in South Africa. Crowds flock to stadiums like eager seagulls waiting for their next bite of football action. Once they arrive in their droves, they are totally hooked. The atmosphere is absolutely electric as football fever is sweeping across Potchefstroom, especially now that the NWU Pukke are performing brilliantly thus far. Their first home match, against Wits, was a great spectacle, which was exciting, even though only one goal was scored. NWU Pukke’s next match is against NMMU on Thursday 13 August 2015 and promises to be a great opportunity for the home team to gain all three points in a televised match.

Here are five fabulous reasons to watch Varsity Football
1. Young and hungry talent
The stage is set for South Africa’s best university football players to show their skills and become the PSL’s next stars. This tournament has already captured the interest of former Bafana Bafana striker, Shaun Bartlett, as well as other notable names in South African football. Talent scouts also watch these games regularly and they might pick up on a player whose footballing dreams might just happen, sooner than expected.

2. Free stadium entrance

There is no excuse for not coming to watch the football on game day at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds. All supporters need to do, is to download the Varsity Sports app on their mobile phones. For those who cannot download the app, or are low on data, can access the grounds at a small entrance fee of only R10.

3. Free giveaways and awesome competitions

Varsity Football is also full of entertainment and packed with competitions and prizes. There are a dancing competition, football-related kick for goal competitions and voting competitions. Debonairs Pizza will also be giving away free pizza to the most passionate fans, so be sure to make your voice heard.

4. Unpredictable matches
In the 2015 edition, the competition has been immensely stiff with all the teams getting at least one win in the competition. Expect more upsets, more goals and more great attacking displays from these sides, who have nothing to lose in their aim – to be crowned Varsity Football champions

5. Varsity bragging rights
UP-Tuks have claimed the bragging rights for the previous two editions of the competition and, maybe this year, their run will end. Tuks, on the other hand, will want to accomplish an unprecedented hat trick. If the competition continues in this competitive vein, then they may really have to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Would it not be nice if Potchefstroom’s NWU Pukke can hold the trophy aloft come 24 September in front of a packed Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds? Only time will tell.
