Two of NWU Puk’s star athletes, Caster Semenya and Elroy Gelant recently made headlines on the world athletics stage.
Gelant set a new SA record in the 5000-m in his fourth place finish at a World Challenge League meeting in Hengelo, Netherlands. Gelant posted a time of 13:04.88, beating the national record held by Stephen Mokoka. Gelant’s time was 6.76 seconds faster.
This is a great boost for Gelant leading up to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro that begins in August this year.
Semenya also continued the good form she showed at the Varsity Athletics and USSA meeting and set the world stage alight with the fastest time this season.
During the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco on 22 May, she ran a fantastic time of 1:56.64 in the 800-metres and looks like the one to beat heading into Rio.
