Madiba magic was in the air on Thurday night when NMMU completed an historic come from behind 38-34 win against NWU Pukke in Varsity Netball action at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch.

In a true underdog story, the ladies from Port Elizabeth showed heart and perseverance to take the wind out of the their opponent’s sails. Pukke on the other hand can kick themselves for not using their chances and letting their lead slip.

The Madibaz have now booked their spot in the semi-finals for the first time and will take on Tuks for a place in the semi-final.

The first half of the match between Pukke and NMMU went mostly in Pukke’s favour as Kifiloe Tsotetsi and Marna Claassens banged in the goals for Pukke in the first 30 minutes. Their synchronisation in attack contributed to Pukke taking a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 20-14 lead at half-time.

Tsotetsi and Claassens got a run in the starting line up as Proteas, Sigi Burger and Renske Stoltz were on national duty and unavailable for the match. Pukke rested a number of key players having already qualified for the semi-final.

The Madibaz’ main threat throughout the evening was center, Arné Rust who had an energetic game. Goal shooter, Nolusindiso Twani was also at the heart of everything good for NMMU on the attack and her goals kept NMMU in touching distance for the majority of the match. Credit must also be given to Philene van Niekerk for her defence throughout the match.

Pukke’s inexperience on the bench counted against them as the game got tighter and the Madibaz knew that the Powerplay could work in their favour.

This was exactly what happened as the Madibaz stormed back from behind and like a true Port Elizabeth wind had the Pukke in a spin with a couple of quick goals.

The final whistle signaled the momentous win for the Madibaz who will surely use this victory to inspire them to greater heights in the future.

The defeat also decreases any momentum that the Pukke had going into a crucial semi-final clash with Maties in two weeks time.
