Imagine going to cricket practice with the risk of damaging property or injuring your fellow players or civilians on the streets.
This is what Ikageng Cricket Club’s cricketers have to deal with weekly because of the poor conditions of their cricket nets and practice facilities next to Ikageng Stadium. Players regularly hit the balls into the nearby streets with one player even damaging a nearby car when he hit the ball there by mistake.
‘The players risk damaging the cars when they bat, mainly because there is no caging above the three active nets that we currently have. The green carpets have also worn through and this can create a dangerous situation for the players when the ball bounces unevenly on the concrete,’ said Ikageng Hub manager and coach, William Molewa.
Molewa fears that innocent bystanders could also be inadvertently hit by the cricket balls if adequate caging is not installed soon.
‘We are asking members of the community to assist with funding or in any other way so that the players can practise on facilities that are in a working condition. This is very important,’ he added.
