Victoria Lake Canoe Club hosted one of the first early river races for the new season, on 3 June, covering a distance of some 30 kilometres with some serious rapids and technically difficult sections of river, from Daleside, on the Klip River, to Meyerton.
The North West University has new paddlers every year as new students enrol, and being young and adventurous they are often less intimidated than average Gauteng paddlers.
Ronald Botha took on the challenge in a single kayak (K1) finishing in 2 hours 39 minutes, while Louis Hugo and Calvin Lion-Cachet partnered up together as novices, to finish the race in 3 hours 47 minutes after numerous swims which they handled with aplomb and lots of chuckles. The river race was identified specifically to assist novices with their first river races to provide support to get them up and active on rivers and experienced paddlers were encouraged to partner with them for the first few races of winter, to help them find their river feet.
