NWU continued their dominance in this year Varsity Cricket campaign with a crushing 91 run win against Maties at Senwes Park on Wednesday night. Pukke batted first and hit 195/4 before bowling Maties out for 104.

NWU made a perfect start with Janneman Malan (86 off 51) and Shane Dadswell (65 off 46) putting on a solid 137 run opening partnership.

Dadswell continued his good form with the bat and hit a superb half-century as the NWU pilled on the runs.

Malan also brought up a half-century of his own shortly thereafter with a couple of thunderous fours and sixes. Malan also played some audacious reverse sweeps and paddles to complement the brute force he showed earlier.

Maties were also not at their best in the field as NWU exploited the gaps with some clever hitting and benefitted from a few missed chances.

Maties needed a breakthrough and Fenito Mehl got the vital wicket of Dadswell with the score on 137.

Jean Bredenkamp then joined Malan and together they added 36 runs before Malan lost his wicket for 86 clean bowled by left-armer, William Sendin.

Ruan Haasbroek, fresh off his 90 against UCT and Van Wyngaardt finished off the innings on 195/4 with Haasbroek losing his wicket with the final ball of the innings.

Maties’ batsmen were not going to go down with a fight and Fritz de Beer led the charge with some crisp hitting in his innings of 36 (23).

NWU got the first big breakthrough when Julian Soutter picked up the wicket of Vezokuhle Mntungwa with his first ball with the score on 42.

De Beer was next to go as Dyllan Matthews got the crucial wicket with a caught and bowled off his second ball to leave Maties at 63/3.

NWU’s spinners took control thereafter as they kept things tight with economical stump to stump bowling.

Wickets flowed and from 77/3 to 96/8 in the blink of an eye as Matthews confused the living daylights out the Maties batsmen to end with (4/14). Julian Soutter also chipped in with 3/14 from his four overs.

Maties eventually was dismissed for 104 as NWU ended with 91 run win.
