Two of NWU Netball’s top talents and SA players, Sigi Burger and Romé Dreyer, showcased their skills on the international stage during the Diamond Challenge netball tournament last weekend.
This continental netball tournament took place at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Polokwane. South Africa won comfortably with a 73–44 thrashing of Zimbabwe in the final.
Dreyer was named the centre court player of the tournament for her consistent, outstanding efforts. She has excelled in her netball in the past two years and has shown she can compete with the top of the crop.
The African nations didn’t provide much resistance to the Proteas women if one considers the 85–22 scoreline in their match against Botswana. But Burger and Dreyer still showed the level of talent that NWU netball produces regularly.
The SA captain, Bongi Msomi, expressed her joy at the team’s performance on Netball SA’s Facebook page,
‘It’s such a good feeling. I think the scoreline doesn’t really mean much. What does, is what we put on the court today.’ Yesterday, we weren’t satisfied with what we did so, today the plan was to go out hard and implement our strategies. It’s been really amazing. As usual, there’s always room to grow but this was a great performance. I’m really proud of the girls,’ said Msomi to Netball SA.
Tournament awards:
Player of the Tournament – Bongi Msomi (South Africa)
Best Centre Court Player – Romé Dreyer (South Africa)
Best Shooter – Diana Banda (Zambia)
