The NWU made their mark this past Friday evening (1 March) at the first 2019 Varsity Athletics meeting where they took top honours with a victory at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch.
The NWU athletes finished in first place on 15 590 points, with a strong UJ (15 545) side coming second and Tuks (15 434) claiming third spot.
The NWU’s, Riette Heyns took gold in the hammer throw with a record breaking distance of 57.11m, whilst Mpho Links also claimed top spot in the men’s high jump with a 2.20m jump, outlasting WP and Maties sensation, Breyon Poole (2.15m) in a classic contest. NWU long jump athlete, Joné Kruger, also took home the victrix lodorum award for the best female athlete after a record jump of 6.45m.
Regular achiever, Tshepang Makhethe (hammer throw) also took first place with a throw just uner 70m. The NWU will now hold the cards heading to the second and final leg which will occur at home in Potchefstroom on Friday, 15 March at the NWU McArthur Stadium.
