Even though the NWU did not make the final this season after a tough 24-18 loss to Tuks in Pretoria in Monday, they still produced moments of fantastic rugby throughout the season with the next couple of players stand out from the pack.
Wian Conradie
The flank/eighthman was influential this season with his marauding runs from the back of the scrum or when in possession of ball at the back of rucks. When youngster, Edmund Rheeder got the nod at eighthman, Conradie effortlessly move to openside flank and incombination with Gideon van der Merwe were one of the best loose trios of the tournament. Conradie also contributed with a number of important tries, including one on the semi-final.

Lungelo Gosa
The man with the dreads and x-factor was one of the most instantly recognisable and energetic players during the tournament, who made an impact every time he had the ball. Gosa played on the wing in this tournament, out of his more preferred position of fullback and still gave his all. His standout moment was his dash down the touchline to set up Gideon van der Merwe’s try against Wits.

Chuiner van Rooyen
The flashy former Helpmekaar Kollege star was one of the new recruits who made the biggest impact, with his silky and evasive runs causing headaches for opposition defences. His performances against UJ in the opening game had rugby fans sitting up and taking notice. Van Rooyen had another great game against Wits, but he grew quiet in some matches, not making the impact everyone craved.

Schalk Hugo
Mr. Reliable from the kicking tee, continued his rise with another solid display. Hugo is improving each season although his tactical kicking let him down on occasion. He still commanded the backline like a true general, knowing when to make the big skip pass or when to run into the gap. His quick thinking that led to a cross kick for Gosa’s try against Shimlas was truly terrific. His fantastic over 90% kicking record was also a testament to his skill when kicking for goal.

Chucky van der Westhuizen
NWU’s captain and squad veteran had another solid tournament where his storming runs, hard hitting defence and ball stealing skills were on full display. His lineouts needed some work on occasion, but in general Chucky lead from the front with his play. He gave it his all in his final Varsity Cup tournament.

Gideon van der Merwe
Van der Merwe is truly one of the most improbved players this season as his support play, defence and run with ball in hand were top class. Van der Merwe was everywhere this season and showed why he plays for NWU 7’s team as well with some pacy runs. The blindside flank is also fitter and stronger than the previous seasons and it has shown in this campaign.
