One on One: Nkululeko Mcuma

This year, Leopards and NWU Varsity Cup player, Nkululeko Mcuma, has taken centre stage on the rugby field with a breakthrough season for both union and varsity.

This season, the outside centre was one of the stars in the Leopards backline. He scored three excellent tries and created space and opportunities for his teammates to catch some white line fever.

“I was thrilled to be called up to the senior Leopards team; it was a highlight to play in the Currie Cup first division for the first time,” he said. Mcuma had previously struggled with various injuries that slowed down his progress in his formative years at the NWU.
According to him, he has enjoyed his time on the rugby field this year, with his try against the Valke being one of the best memories.

“There was a lot of interplay and passes in that move and it was great to finish it off,” he added.
Mcuma, a former Glenwood High alumnus, will be in action for the NWU in the Pirates Grand Challenge final this weekend, where they will meet Wits.

“I haven’t played many matches in this competition but I’m hoping that we can get the win,” said Mcuma. He was also a part of the 2016 Varsity Cup-winning NWU-squad.

“The big goal will be to play in the Pro 14 or Super Rugby. So, those are two options,” he replied when quizzed about his future in rugby.
This B.Com marketing management student still has a couple of season’s left in Potchefstroom. He will be hoping to continue his good form and take his rugby career to greater heights.
