NWU Canoe polo team play at nationals

Canoe Polo is a game with rules similar to netball played in versatile boats,

The South African Canoe Polo Championships was hosted at the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, at Emmarentia Dam on 21, 22 and 23 March 2025.
The players who did well are hoping for selection to the 2025 African Championships and the 2026 World Championships in Germany!

A large number of teams from throughout SA participated at the event representing Western Cape, North West University / Potchefstroom, and others

Players from North West University representing Gauteng participated as well as players who train at Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, and the East Rand Kayak club based in Benoni and there was a team from the Western Cape.

Canoe Polo is a game similar to netball played in versatile boats, and the players have to throw the ball into the net to score goal, or use paddles to deflect the oppositions ball from reaching their net.

The North West Players included Rowan Attwell, and Diederik Brits in the Gauteng under 21 Men’s team who won the Gold medal at the championships, while Wynand Kershoff, an Under 16 player from Potchefstroom was included in the team, with Dian Pienaar, Wikus Kriek, as well as Martin and Stefan Prins.

Ladies from the NWU – Dominique Straub, and Danica Barnard were in the Gauteng Open Women’s A Team, and Tori Little participated in the B team.

Tori grew up in KZN paddling rivers while attending Epworth High School and loved canoe polo immediately she tried it in Grade 10. She has participated in 3 SA Championships and currently at NWU Potchefstroom studying biokinetics and very grateful for support from the university for the sport!

The Gauteng North West University Men’s team finished in 4th place at the Championships
