Potch Runners celebrate Comrades 2025 finishers

Potch Runners hosted their second annual Comrades Awards Day on 26 July 2025, honouring 30 finishers and 11 supporters. With increased turnout and inspiring stories, the event united local clubs and celebrated the spirit of running in Potchefstroom.

The energy was electric on 26 July 2025 as runners from across Potchefstroom laced up for something different.

This time, not a race, but a celebration. Potch Runners hosted their second annual Comrades Marathon Awards Ceremony, a gathering to honour the athletes who took on the ultimate human race, and the unsung heroes who supported them every step of the way.

What started as a small idea has quickly become a highlight on the local running calendar. Potch Runners isn’t a formal club, but rather a united group of passionate athletes from various clubs including SAPS AC, SANDF AC, 295 AC, Tlokwe AC, Nedbank AC, and others, all committed to celebrating their shared journey.

This year, 30 Comrades finishers and 11 supporters were recognised, a clear sign that the spirit of unity and endurance is spreading. The event was as much about appreciation as it was about inspiration, and drew a noticeably bigger crowd, including a strong showing from Tlokwe AC.

Mr Thamsanqa Tomi from SAPS AC, who served as MC, set the tone by reminding everyone that the Comrades isn’t just a physical test it’s emotional for families too.

“We are here to celebrate the ones who stayed up worrying, cheering, and praying while we were out chasing the finish line,” he said.

Coach Kaizer, a sports science student and running coach, gave practical advice on training with purpose, living a healthy lifestyle, and the importance of avoiding doping while managing stress as an athlete.

One of the standout moments came from Ms Palesa Lehasa, who completed her first Comrades this year. She shared how moved she was when her father expressed how proud he was of her, a moment she said brought her to tears. She credited her success to her coach Mr Tshwarelo Maloi from SANDF AC and her supportive team, 445. For her, finishing the Comrades was a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

As the day drew to a close, Mr Mbipha from Nedbank AC delivered a sincere vote of thanks on behalf of the organisers. He applauded the collective effort that made the event a success in a short space of time and acknowledged all those who contributed financially. He encouraged members to continue backing Potch Runners, reminding them that big things often start small and that this is only the beginning.
