Van Zyl shows character in first round Australian Open defeat

The 16-year old Jahnie van Zyl took the first round match to three sets and gave her all despite developing blisters during the match.

The road at the 2026 Australian Open Junior Championship has ended for Potchefstroom tennis star, Jahnie van Zyl, after going down in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-1) in the first round against Australia’s Tori Russell.

Van Zyl (16) put up a spirited effort on the big stage against the local Australian with the sun beating down on court 5.

She lost the first set 4-6, before coming back in the second with a 7-6 (7) win in the tie break. The final set proved a step too far for Van Zyl who had developed blisters on her feet, which limited her mobility on court. She lost that set 1-6.

Van Zyl, a former Mooirivier and Gimmies learner, can be proud of an immense effort, where she showed steely determination to reach the first round, having needed to win two qualifying matches.

She earlier beat Australia’s Musemma Cilek 6-4, 6-4 and Japan’s Kokona Ishii 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to book her spot in the main card.
