Leos’ pride in civic service grows
Toti pupils are learning the merits of service to others after the introduction of the Leo Club in local schools two years ago.
The Amanzi Alpha Leo Club was chartered by eThekwini South Lions Club in April 2012. This is a school-based Leos Club that meets at Amanzimtoti High School.
Currently there are 11 active members, seven of whom are Toti High pupils. The president is Mariska Viljoen, a grade 11 pupil at Toti High and the faculty Leo advisor is Toti High teacher, Debbie Lindeque. “I only joined the Leos this year, so it was a nice surprise to be elected as president last month,” said Mariska.
The Leo Club objective is to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community. The Leo Club motto is: Leadership – to develop skills as a project organiser, time manager and team leader; experience – to learn how teamwork, co-operation and collaboration can bring exciting changes to your community and the world; and opportunity – to make friends and feel the rewards of community service.
“We are involved in charity work and fundraising,” said Mariska. One of the Leos’ projects is uplifting a local rural school, House Kids Educare Centre, which cares for about 250 children. “We recently painted the school and now we will concentrate on fundraising to fix the school’s roof.”
‘This is line with the organisation’s aims of building up young people to help others and have fun while doing it, said Debbie. “These children are hardworking and committed, which is great as they are learning to do for others.”
Mariska’s term as preseident runs for a year. Thereafter she may opt to be available for re-election. “Being part of the Leo Club doesn’t affect my schoolwork, as all our meetings and activities take place after school hours.”
Pupils can join the Leo Club to see if they would enjoy helping others. If not, they are free to drop out before the induction. “I urge other pupils to get involved,” said Mariska. “Being part of the Leo Club makes you realise what other children are going through and it is satisfying to help others.” For more information on the Leo Club, contact Debbie on 031-903-2374.
