Mud, sweat and no fear for Toti rider
AN AMANZIMTOTI rider braved rain, mud and tough conditions to conquer the Roof of Africa motorcycle race.
Wesley Imeson is ecstatic after finishing in sixth position in the silver class on the last day of this gruelling motorcycle race, being only one of four Toti competitors to finish the race. “This is one of the toughest events I’ve ever done, I’m glad I finished it,” said Wesley.
This year’s race was held from 14 to 16 November in Maseru, Lesotho. Riders from across the globe take part in this challenging race which starts and ends at Bushman’s Pass. He placed fourth in the bronze class in last year’s race.
Wesley started riding aged seven, with his father Kevin supporting him all the way.
This year’s race was particularly tough with torrential rain challenging riders who battled it out in very muddy conditions. Wesley placed 29th after the first day’s racing. Conditions worsened on day two of the race. “Day two was really difficult, it was cold and miserable and my body wanted to give up,” said Wesley. He ended day two placed 11th – and contemplated whether to stop racing.
“My pit crew motivated me to ride on the third day. This race really destroys you mentally and physically. But I thought I’d come this far, I had to finish the race. My GPS helped me keep things together.” said Wesley.
The 22-year-old former Doonheights pupil conquered the tough Bushman’s Pass on day three to end the final day in sixth position. “My spirit was finished on the last day, the rain made it technical and there was no traction on the road,” said Wesley.
“Wesley is a skilled rider, wet conditions suit him. If you are not hungry to ride, you won’t make this race. Wesley can be proud of this achievement. Training is key for this race and you have to be able to adapt to the various conditions,” said Kevin, who placed fourth in the bronze class in 2008.
Support has played a key role in Wesley’s riding career. “I would like thank my father and my sponsors M Projects, GT Fabric, Sea Breeze and Baytronics for all their help and support in enabling me to compete,” said Wesley.
His next goal is to compete in the gold class of next year’s race. Watch out motor riding world, here’s a star on the rise. -sharle@dbn.caxton.co.za
