EDITOR – A word of thanks to those who chose the section of beach close to the Amanzimtoti lagoon, to celebrate the day after Christmas.
Working as I do most days on dune rehabilitation in this area, I am inclined to ‘spy’ on activities that might impact negatively on what we have accomplished over the past 2 1/2 months.
The sight of so many people on the beach, and noticing a few walking behind the barrier that we have erected to protect the dune, had me feeling somewhat concerned. It was a pleasant surprise on Friday morning to see the obvious effort made by visitors to leave the beach as they had found it, this despite there being only one DSW bin close at hand.
Apart from the odd scattering of cans and bottles, most litter had been left in or alongside the bin. I filled one litter bag with odds and ends, but this was far less than I had expected. Thanks must also go to our parks department’s beach maintenance staff, and to others involved in keeping our beaches clean, for the extra effort that they expend over the festive season. Your work does not go unnoticed, and it is much appreciated.
