Operation Gijima rolled out in Isipingo

A host of issues plaguing the Isipingo area were addressed in an operation by eThekwini Municipality, various departments and police.

THE GREATER Isipingo area including Orient Hills, Isipingo Beach and Isipingo Hills, which falls under Ward 90, has historically suffered lackadaisical service delivery.

With this in mind, the eThekwini Municipality’s Operation Gijima recently rolled out across several departments to address the community’s needs holistically.

Gugu Sisilana, spokesperson for eThekwini Municipality, said the operation concluded on a positive note, with most of the targeted service delivery challenges receiving the required attention.

Sisilana said that several businesses were visited as part of the operation to assess health and safety compliance, and issued fines for non-compliance.

“Officials ensured owners were trading with a business licence, and confiscated expired food items being sold. Blocked stormwater drains were cleared, illegal dumps were removed, water leaks were repaired and illegal electricity connections were removed,” said Sisilana.

Operation Gijima also tackled illegal immigration, with four foreign nationals being arrested.

Countless departments were involved, including Isipingo Area Based Management, Business Licensing, metro police, Safer Cities, Cleansing and Solid Waste, Water and Sanitation, Business Support, Roads and Stormwater, Parks, Electricity, Advertising, Environmental Health, Security Management, the SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs.
