Cancer challenge golfers show grit at UGC
A big thank you to Alan Branfield for coming out to Umkomaas as well as Jack Singery, Graham McPherson and Tyler Naidoo for their support.

WHAT a wonderful response Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) had from members and visitors to the Sanlam Cancer Challenge last Saturday.
Apologies to all who were caught up at the start of the day, held up in the middle, then coming down the 18th in near darkness at the end.
It just goes to show that UGC members and supporters have ‘true grit’ when it comes to supporting a competition with such a worthy cause attached to it.
There were over 60 players in the cancer challenge alone, and almost 150 players out on the course on Saturday, so it was a great day for the club. There were some grumblings but hopefully they will all be forgotten by next weekend. The club thanks one and all for making the Sanlam Cancer Challenge such a success.
A big thank you to Alan Branfield for coming out to Umkomaas as well as Jack Singery, Graham McPherson and Tyler Naidoo for their support.
The results are as follows: Men’s A division: First Lindani Mthiyani on 45 points; second Andy Davidge on 37 points; third Nic de Klerk on 34 points, counting out Michael van Rensburg on 34 points.
In the men’s B division: First Jimmy Spear on 43 points; second Tom Naicker on 40 points; third Mike Cromhout on 39 points.
Men’s C division: First Tash Naicker on 45 points; second Dave Robertson on 41 points; Piet Vermaak on 40 points.
Congratulations to all the players and the winners but especially young Tash Naicker who is 12-years-old and plays off a 22 handicap. Well done Tash on winning the C division.
The women also had good results, playing (unusually) in all three divisions. Women’s A division: First Sabiha Bacaus on 38 points; second Michelle van der Merwe on 36 points.
Women’s B divison: First Annette Gillett on 36 points; second Annette Thorold on 32 points. Women’s B division: First Leigh Beckerling on 35 points, counting out Bryony Rogers into second place also on 35 points.
Nearest the pins were: Fourth Denise Nell, ninth Etienne Botha, 13th Annette Thorold and 17th Michael van Rensburg.
Back to Wednesday’s individual stableford where the club welcomed Claude Osborne and Herman Steyn to the competition at prize-giving. Despite the gusty ‘breeze’ which blew in the late morning, the winner was Andy Davidge on 37 points, counting out Jimmy Spear into second spot, Eric Morsner into third place and Barrie Taylor into fourth slot, all on 37 points. Taking fifth place in the same count out was Roddy McGibbon. All these players managed to end their afternoon on 37 points – it really doesn’t get much closer than that.
The bingo evening held last Friday night was a great success. Thanks to Dawn and her staff for the delicious meals, everyone had an enjoyable evening with friends. The next bingo night will be announced soon, so watch this space.
Next week’s competition is the fourball better ball with social golf on Sunday. Bear in mind that the green fees went up slightly on Sunday, 1 June.
Let’s not forget the Sardine Run which is getting ever closer – there could still be time to register your team on the website at www.sardinegolf.co.za
