Club champs this weekend at Merewent AC

With the cold weather, one really needs to find the motivation to train in these conditions.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club reminds all junior, senior and vets athletes about the club 10km champs which takes place on Sunday, 3 August at Merewent AC at 7am.

Entries will be taken on the morning.

The club encourages all members to participate in the champs.

The club will supply a burger and cool drink after the race.

The seventh event in the 2014 KZNA cross-country league was held on Saturday, 26 July at the UKZN sports fields in Durban. The event numbers were slightly down from earlier leagues, with around 250 athletes competing. Masters athletes (30+ years) still dominate the participation numbers, with the club’s senior men shying away from cross-country with numbers alarmingly low throughout the season. The Amanzimtoti AC numbers in both the senior and junior age groups were somewhat disappointing with only 10 athletes entered -three youth boys, six masters (30+ years) and one senior.

These athletes kept the Toti flag flying high, showing some excellent results:

Youth boys age 17: Fourth Senzo Ngcobo 23.38.90, ninth Sphesihle Nxele 26.09.15.

Youth boys age 19: Second Lindokhule Cele 25.48.37.

Master women age 50+: Third Jolanda Broodryk 21.45.34. Master men age 30+: Sixth Nhlanhla Nzama 30.36.27. Master men age 45+: First Robert Gcanba 31.22.51, second Chris Stange 33.23.58. Master men age 60+: Sixth Cecil Clarke 32.08.26. Master men age 65+: Fifth Ron Sayer 32.07.70.

Senior open men: Fifth Mbongeni Maphumulo 44.10.29.

There are only two normal league events left before the KZN cross-country champs scheduled for 23 August in Amanzimtoti. Utrecht in Northern KZN will host league eight on Saturday, 2 August and Richmond will host the final league nine event on 9 August.

With the cold weather, one really needs to find the motivation to train in these conditions. However, now is the time to work on improving speed. The workout to practise race pace, three 400 metres at a time: First do a 15 minute warm up, ending in 15 seconds strides. Do three 400 metres at a 10km pace with 200m recovery jogs, three 400 metres at 5km pace. Then three 400 metres at a 100 pace jog with 400 metres between each set.

The Mandela Marathon is a pre-entry event which closes on 31 July. No late entries will be accepted.

Club members are reminded to wear reflective gear for the Wednesday time trial.

Well done to the club’s Karen Sobrino, who was the second woman home in the Swiss Alpine C42 in a time of 3:54:52, in very wet conditions.

All new members are encouraged to join in the Wednesday time trial or the Saturday morning run.
