Figure skaters scoop medals at champs

Team members from Toti brought back top accolades in various sections.

The KZN figure skating team, comprising many local figure skaters, recently trekked up to Pretoria to participate in the annual Gauteng inter-provincial championships from 5 to 7 September at new The Grove Ice Rink.
“With the Durban Ice Rink undergoing renovations, all KZN figure skaters have made the Galleria Ice Rink their home for the year,” said coach, Wendy Hammen.
“Team members from Toti not only added to Team KZN’s numbers, but brought back top accolades in various sections.”
Meagan Tancrel (10), a pupil at Athlone Primary School, took top honours in the bronze hawks girls section.
Megan Coetzee (10), also of Athlone Primary School, took third place in the juvenile girls section.
Kirsten McLachlan (16), a pupil at Amanzimtoti High School, was awarded a well-deserved second place in in the fiercely-contested golden eagles women’s section.
In the adult skate sections, Evelien Ballantine (55) and David Trevor-Roberts (44) won the adult beginner technical women and men’s titles respectively.
Not to be outdone by the youngsters, Evelien and David participated in the adult bronze novice dance section, scooping another two gold medals.
The local synchronised skating team, Toti Seals wowed the audience with their newly-acquired routine.
Other local skaters who participated in this event are: Bronze hawks girls: Katlyn McFerrier, Kayla Botha and Pia Ramcharitan; silver falcons girls: Jade Nel, Ané Rheeder, Nicole Low, Mickayla Pieterse, Jenna Corder, Monique Mitchley and Paige Tancrel; golden eagles women: Cayley-Jayne Corder, Chantelle van Niekerk and Jessica van Onselen.
