CONGRATULATIONS to Peter Toward on being elected Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) club captain last Friday, 6 October at the AGM.
Congratulations to Graham Coxell, vice captain and the newly elected commitee members Bruce Sutcliffe, Bing Opie, Nelson Moonsamy and Jimmy Pickavance. Devlyn Fraser remains chairman of the club.
Members wish the incoming club captain, chairman and committee all the very best for 2018.
Last Wednesday, 4 October the individual stableford welcomed Koos Malan from Tzaneen Golf Club. The winner was Nelson Moonsamy on 42 great points with Rob Mathias in second spot with 41 points. Taking third place on a count out was Strand Striker, Richard Andersson from Simon van den Bosch in fourth slot, both players on 39 points
UGC had the pleasure of hosting the East Coast Brewing Company’s fourball alliance golf day last Saturday, 7 October with tremendous success. Many thanks to East Coast Brewing Company for the generous prizes, as well as the goodie boxes for each player on arrival. Even the ‘wobbly putter’ on the last green couldn’t deter the players’ enjoyment. Many thanks to Shireen Riviere for organising, to Natalie, Vlasta and Lesa who helped hand out the boxes as well as the other million and one things that needed to be done, not forgetting the guys from ECBC who manned the draught taps all day. The support is appreciated. There was R100,000 (no, it’s not a misprint) up for grabs for a hole-in-one on the 13th. This hole has never been so valuable in its 104 years of existence. Winners on a score 92 points were Mlondi Zithumane, Koko Zithumane, Phiwa Mkoma and Emmanual Godongwane who went home with the main prize. Tony Lokker, Hannes Beneker, Steve Naude and Michael Slabbert were in second place, counting out third placed Bruce Fallet, Ross Fallet, Neville Dawson and Tim Hambly, both teams on 91 points. All in all, it was a great day which was enjoyed by all the players.
Saturday, 14 October is the Toyota monthly medal and mug competition, albeit a week later than usual. There will be social golf on Sunday, 15 October as well as the Sunday ‘bash’ for those golfers interested in playing. Players playing the ‘bash’ meet at around 10am to register before they tee off, so any handicapped player is welcome to go down and join guys in the fight for the cash prizes up for grabs.
The club reports with much sorrow on the death of two of its favourite ‘members’ in the past week. To Edith Hoffman on the sudden death of her beloved Ben van der Sandt on Thursday, and to Ivy Harding on the death of her wonderful husband Ken on Saturday, UGC’s club captain, committee, staff and members, sincere condolences to both Edith and Ivy at this sad time.
Members’ hearts are filled with sorrow for these lovely women and their families. They are wished strength at this sad time in their lives. Everyone who knew both Ken and Ben will know, without a doubt, that they were two of the finest gentlemen not only at the club but in their everyday lives as well.
Members are reminded that Spring treatment will start on Monday, 16 October and will continue until Friday, 20 October. The office will be open during the morning to take calls but there will be no golf on Wednesday. If members wish to play at the local, surrounding clubs, reciprocity will be arranged.
