This year’s “down run” starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Durban.

AAC captain Warren Gibson said out of the 32, there are five first-time Comrades participants. He wished everyone good luck.

“You have put in the mileage and the time on the legs. Just go out there and do your best,” said Gibson.

More than 24 000 runners from around the world signed up for this year’s race, and 35 000 spectators are expected to cheer the runners on along the way.

eThekwini Municipality indicated that it is ready to co-host this 98th edition of the Comrades and has plans in place to ensure a successful race. Mayor Cyril Xaba said hosting the event will have a direct spend of R275m and GDP contribution of R681m, with 1800 jobs created.

“Hosting such major international events brings us much joy, as it is a strong indication that we are among other international cities known for successfully delivering memorable sporting events. We will continue to leverage on such events as they boost the local economy and drive tourism,” said Xaba.

The race will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30 and finish 12 hours later at Moses Mabhida Stadium, People’s Park in Durban.

Motorists and all road users are urged to use alternative routes as roads along the race route will be affected by road closures.
