Amanzimtoti defeats Ballito in league opener

Despite a last-minute venue change due to rain, Amanzimtoti Rugby Club's first and second teams claimed solid wins over Ballito.

AMANZIMTOTI Rugby Club teams came out victorious in their home encounters with the visiting Ballito Rugby Club on April 5, despite rain causing the matches to be moved to an unfamiliar pitch.

Amanzimtoti High School’s field became the temporary home ground for Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s first and second teams’ opening matches of the season as the Hutchinson Park field was water-logged. Despite the venue change, the Amanzimtoti teams delivered exceptional performances, showing both good skills and determination on the field.

In the first match of the day, Amanzimtoti’s second team emerged victorious, defeating Balito 31-19. The team also earned the full bonus point by scoring four or more tries and achieving a comfortable margin of victory. Yakhani Mbongwa was a standout player in the second team, displaying exceptional skills and performance throughout the match. In the forwards Meluleki Lugayeni played a key role, displaying good leadership on the field and adding physicality to the team’s play. In the backline, Calvin Machado contributed significantly with his speed and tactical awareness, linking up effectively with the forwards to create scoring opportunities.

In the second match, Amanzimtoti’s first team took to the field wearing their newly launched jerseys, which featured the club’s iconic orange and black colours. The striking new kit symbolised the beginning of a new era for the club under the leadership of newly appointed coach, Owen Masinga. Although the team was playing on unfamiliar turf, they demonstrated remarkable adaptability and composure, securing a 25-8 victory.

One of the standout performances of the first team match came from Keagan Myburgh, whose impact was felt throughout the game. Myburgh’s tireless work ethic on the field earned him widespread recognition. His aggressive runs, timely tackles, and excellent defensive contributions put constant pressure on the opposition and were crucial in maintaining control of the game.

In the backline, Travis Mathews played a pivotal role in the team’s attacking strategies. Mathews’ excellent communication with his teammates provided stability to the backline and ensured fluid attacking play. Up front, Kwanele Zama delivered a commanding performance. Zama’s performance in tight phases allowed his teammates to exploit the ball and keep the momentum flowing, ensuring a consistent offensive strategy.

After the match the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club executive committee express their gratitude to the leadership and staff of Amanzimtoti High School.
