The accused, Rabichund Bikram (55) was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, with two years suspended.
A SENIOR detective from Wentworth police station, Sergeant Bhekithemba Manqoba Zulu, secured a conviction in the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently in an attempted murder case dating back to 2020.
The accused, Rabichund Bikram (55), was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, with two years suspended.
Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the attempted murder occurred on Nasik Road in Merebank on November 20, 2020.

The victim was attacked at their home
“According to reports, three friends were speaking with a relative outside a yard when a red vehicle approached and stopped nearby. Three men exited the vehicle, one of whom was known to the victims,” said Gumede.
Bikram was among the three men travelling in the car.
“Tensions escalated quickly, resulting in a heated argument. One of the men pulled out a firearm and fired two shots at one of the victims. The other two, allegedly armed as well, also fired at the victim, who fled down a footpath seeking cover. The accused then fled the scene in their vehicle,” said Gumede.

He said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including to the chest, upper arm, and right wrist.
“His friends transported him to Wentworth Hospital for treatment. The suspects’ vehicle was noted to have damage to the left rear-view mirror and driver’s side window,” he said.
Detective Zulu took over the investigation in December 2020
Following the shooting, a case of attempted murder was opened at Wentworth police station.
“On December 1, 2020, the three men were arrested at the police station after being brought in by their attorney. Detective Sergeant Bhekithemba Zulu took over the investigation, charging all three with attempted murder.
“During the court proceedings, bail was opposed due to the accused evading police for a week prior to surrendering. All three witnesses co-operated and testified, aiding the case’s progress. Unfortunately, the two younger accused, aged 29 and 31, passed away from natural causes before sentencing. They were convicted in absentia,” Gumede added.
Zulu was commended by detective head Lieutenant Colonel Nkundla for his dedication and professionalism throughout the investigation, bringing justice to the victim’s family.
