Trio arrested in Higginson Highway high speed chase

The police are investigating a possible link to other incidents of motor vehicle theft reported across the eThekwini region.

THREE suspects linked to cases of theft of motor vehicles in the south of Durban were arrested during a high speed chase on Higginson Highway recently.

It is alleged that the suspects are also linked to a theft of a vehicle in Wentworth.

Members of the police district trio task team, Isipingo Trio Task Team, Chatsworth tracing team and security partners were working on information regarding a white VW Polo that was involved in theft of motor vehicles within eThekwini District.

Police spokesperson in the eThekwini District, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said the police received information that the said vehicle was travelling along Higginson Highway.

“The police managed to track the vehicle and a chase ensued. The vehicle was travelling on the east bound direction, with the police vehicles chasing it.  The suspects suddenly swerved over the island onto the west bound lane and the vehicle collided into a Silver Hyundai Tucson,” she said.

Upon impact three unknown male suspects aged between 30 and 45 sustained minor facial and head injuries and were subsequently arrested.

The police recovered the following items:

  • Two gas guns
  • One stolen SAPS police radio
  • Car break-in implements
  • Vehicle computer boxes
  • One signal jammer

The following cases and counts were opened:

  • Attempted murder
  • Possession of unlicensed firearm
  • Possession of car break-in implements
  • Section 36 and Section 37 (Possession of  Motor Vehicle computer boxes)
  • Possession of a police handset
  • A case of reckless and negligent driving.

Rhynes added, “The detectives will be profiling the suspects to possibly link them to other cases of theft of motor vehicle in the eThekwini district.”
