Wentworth man sentenced to 12 years for armed robbery
The 36-year-old delivery driver was held at gunpoint and robbed of his phone and money after delivering items to a customer in Wentworth.
A 29-year-old man from Wentworth was handed a 12-year prison sentence for an armed robbery that took place in 2024.
Captain Mbuso Gumede, spokesperson for the Wentworth police station, said the conviction traces back to a robbery on October 8, 2024, on Goedehoop Street.

The reported crime
The incident involved a 36-year-old delivery driver who had just finished dropping off an order. As he returned to his personal motorcycle, he encountered an unknown man who suddenly turned off the motorcycle and drew a firearm.
The suspect demanded the driver’s cellphone, and the cash earned from the delivery. Faced with a life-threatening situation, the victim complied.
Shaken and frightened, he was initially unable to provide a full description of the assailant, except for noting the man’s distinct, green-striped coat and plain trousers.
“A case of armed robbery was opened by the complainant on 8 October 2024. On the 17 October 2024, the complainant was at the police station entrance, when he noticed the suspect inside the community service centre being escorted by detectives. The complainant then positively identified the same suspect as the one who robbed him at gunpoint during delivery. A detective who was at the community service centre was notified and detained him for the armed robbery case. The same suspect was being charged for other cases as well during arrests,” said Gumede.
The investigation was handed over to Detective Sergeant Bhekithemba Manqoba Zulu, who compiled the evidence and prepared the case for court proceedings. During the bail hearing, the investigating officer argued effectively against bail, citing the severity of the crime and the accused’s existing charges, which resulted in the suspect remaining in custody.
The accused, known by the nickname “Puppy,” appeared several times before the Durban Regional Court. Ultimately, he was found guilty of armed robbery. On December 1, 2025, the court sentenced him to 12 years of direct imprisonment and ruled him ineligible to own firearms or ammunition.
