Community forum steps up safety measures for places of worship

THE Montclair Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum (SCPF) is strengthening its strategic preventative measures to curb criminal activities, particularly those targeting places of worship.
The initiative follows growing concern among congregants after recent incidents in which vehicles were stolen from church premises in Montclair while services were underway.
The cases, though limited, have raised alarm about the vulnerability of worshippers during gatherings.
Deputy chairperson of the Montclair SCPF, Caleb Sookhoo, said the forum had invited faith-based organisations to openly discuss safety concerns and share solutions.

Sookhoo noted that while Montclair has recorded only two such incidents this year, attacks on places of worship in nearby communities have heightened fears and prompted urgent action.
“The incidents happening in surrounding areas have ignited a call to raise awareness among churches about the importance of taking preventative measures before crime escalates locally,” he said.
During the imbizo, churches and other religious institutions were urged to strengthen security at their premises.
Increased security measures include:
- Increasing visible security presence
- Improving access control
- Encouraging congregants to remain vigilant when attending services.

Sookhoo emphasised that criminals often exploit moments when congregants are inside places of worship, leaving vehicles and property unattended.
“We are advising churches to beef up security at their properties to prevent criminals from taking advantage of these opportunities,” he said.
The Montclair SCPF operates through a broad partnership model that includes:
- Faith-based organisations
- Community-based structures
- Youth structures
- Government departments, and the Moral Regeneration Movement.
He said this collaborative approach aims to address crime proactively while promoting social cohesion.
“The Montclair SCP is for all religions and is calling on all faith-based organisations to take heed of their safety and security,” Sookhoo said.
Community members attending the imbizo welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of safeguarding spaces meant for worship and reflection.
Sookho reiterated that while Montclair has not experienced widespread incidents, early intervention and preventative strategies remain key to ensuring that places of worship remain safe for all.
