Wentworth police warn residents of rise in vehicle thefts

The suspects appear to be targeting light motor vehicles, including models such as Volkswagen Polos and Toyota Cross vehicles.

POLICE in Wentworth have warned the public about an increase in cases of motor vehicle theft and theft from vehicles in the area.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, urged residents to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings.

According to police, several incidents have been reported over the past week, with vehicles being stolen from both business premises and residential properties.

In some cases, suspects allegedly broke locks, tampered with ignition systems, and forced open electronic gates to gain access to vehicles or steal items left inside them.

Police said the thefts occurred at different times, with some vehicles reported stolen between 13:30 and 15:00, while others were taken during the evening and early morning hours between 21:30 and 07:00, when residents were asleep.

“The suspects appear to be targeting light motor vehicles, including models such as Volkswagen Polos and Toyota Cross vehicles, among others,” said Gumede.

He said the modus operandi includes breaking door locks and tampering with vehicle ignition systems.

Residents are urged to:

  • Always activate vehicle alarms and security systems, even when parked inside locked premises.
  • Ensure properties are well lit at night and regularly check security camera systems.
  • Avoid parking vehicles outside homes, even for short periods.
  • Check that vehicle doors are properly locked before walking away.
  • Avoid leaving valuables such as cellphones, laptops, cameras and bags visible inside vehicles.
  • Avoid parking on pavements or grass verges for extended periods.
  • Notify private security companies to conduct patrols when vehicles are parked at home for long periods or when residents are away.

Police also encouraged residents to report suspicious vehicles or individuals, particularly those driving recklessly or aimlessly in the Merewent area.

“Crime affects all of us. It is important to report incidents to SAPS, notify security patrols and alert Metro Police, even when the crime does not directly affect you,” police said.

Police urged the community to work together with law enforcement agencies to combat vehicle-related crimes in the area.
