Wentworth family lucky to escape fire which left them homeless

Residents can donate towards helping the family rebuild their home.

WHEN Marcus Saunders noticed sparks omitting from a plug point as he was boiling water to make milk for his six-month-old baby at 02:00, he panicked. Not quick enough to contain the sparks with his bare hands, various items in his wendy house caught fire.

After realising that he was unable to contain the growing flames, Saunders yelled for his wife and seven-year-old daughter and managed to get them out of their home in Engelbrecht Road before it burned to the ground, in the early hours of April 23.

With burns which he has left untreated due to the demands of picking up the pieces of his life after everything he owned was destroyed in the fire, Saunders says he and his family are lucky to have escaped with their lives.

“My dad, who lives in the main property, called the fire department, but it was too late. Everything burned so quickly. My sister, her boyfriend and their baby live in a wendy house next to mine, and their home also caught alight due to the fire spreading so fast. They have also lost everything they own,” Saunders said.

Community leader, Tracey Williams, who has been assisting the family with necessities since the incident, said she was confident that the community will come together to help the family to rebuild their homes.
“Items, that can be donated for the family, include baby formula, a bottle and a dummy, as well as clothes and shoes for a six-month-old baby girls and a seven-year-old girl. Uniforms for Durban East Primary School and Assegai Primary School can also be donated. Shoes (male size 7 or 8, or female size 4) and clothes for the mum and dad will also be appreciated.
