Calls for metro police to strengthen law enforcement on The Bluff

The residents demand that the police address lawlessness at Anstey’s Beach, and arrest those found drinking in public spaces.

A GROUP of residents, concerned about the lawlessness at Anstey’s Beach on The Bluff, recently held a street meeting to voice their views.

The meeting stems from complaints raised by residents about people harassing them at the beach.

Members of the Bluff Ratepayers and Residents’ Association (BRRA) organised the meeting. Its chairperson, Norman Gilbert, said residents demanded that the metro police act swiftly in apprehending those disobeying the bylaws at the beach.

The association also called on the police to open a satellite mobile police station at Anstey’s Beach.

“Lawlessness like drinking in public at the beach has almost become a daily occurrence. Residents have complained about people who are under the influence of alcohol and then harass them. The residents feel unsafe and no longer feel able to go freely to the beach. We want the police to uphold the rule of law.

“The police have committed to providing a satellite police station, which is expected to run from December to January. However, we are appealing to the police to have a permanent structure along the beach precinct. We expect improvement and are hopeful that the beauty of The Bluff will be restored,” said Gilbert.

The BRRA said in a statement that the police not only attended the meeting, they also made several arrests. This is a step forward, but it’s just the beginning.
