Dramatic high speed chase ends in arrest of four robbery suspects

The suspects robbed another store next to the barbershop on The Bluff before fleeing the scene in a red VW Polo.

FOUR suspects were arrested and charged with business robbery after they robbed a barber shop on The Bluff on Monday (December 2).

Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said the suspects stormed in and robbed patrons, the owners and the store next door of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Other stolen items include cellphones and cigarettes. The suspects ransacked the businesses before fleeing in a red VW Polo sedan.

“PT Alarms Tactical unit south members received a call from a client for assistance following the barber shop robbery.

“The client was pro-active and jumped into his vehicle and discreetly followed the suspects after reporting the incident to PT Alarms,” said Govindasamy.

He said their officers immediately sprang into action and a pursuit commenced with the client providing location updates.

He added that a Durban Metro Police unit also joined in along with an Urban Defence unit, while the Brighton Beach police provided  back-up.

“The suspects fled up Bluff Road, on to Edwin Swales Drive and then on to the M4 northbound heading towards Durban CBD. The suspects veered into Victoria Embankment, heading towards the beachfront where they were cornered by the PT Alarms Tactical officers on Shepstone Road. All four suspects were swiftly apprehended,” added Govindasamy.

These were some of the recovered items:
  • Cash
  • Cellphones
  • A firearm
  • And other items which were stolen in the robbery

The suspects were arrested and charged. They are expected to appear in court this week.
