The suspect was arrested on June 26 after he allegedly robbed a woman in Wentworth.
The police said the victim was walking along Krishna Rabilal Road when the suspect accosted her.
Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the arrest was made during police routine patrols near the race course bridge.
“The members of the Crime Prevention unit heard an individual screaming, saying someone has been robbed.
“The police received information that the suspect had committed a robbery at knifepoint, during which a cellphone was stolen. The suspect then fled on foot, heading toward the railway line,” said Gumede.

A team of officers, led by Vispol commander Lieuteunant Colonel Clive Myburg, immediatley initiated a pursuit on foot.
The police followed the suspect along the railway line and into a nearby bushy area where they arrested the suspect hiding beneath the dense vegetation.
“He was brought out of the bush and questioned regarding the whereabouts of the stolen cellphone.
“Upon further investigation, the police managed to trace the victim who was found walking toward the Merebank Railway station. She appeared visibly traumatised by the ordeal. She identified the arrested suspect as the individual who had robbed her at knifepoint earlier,” said Gumede.
Gumede said the suspect voluntarily led the police to the spot along the railway line where he had thrown the device.
“A search was conducted, during which the victim provided her phone number to the police. Upon dialing it, the ringtone led officers to the device, which was found in the bush.
“The suspect was immediately transported to Wentworth police station where he was charged and detained,” Gumede added.
Myburg urged the community to report crime, and be the eyes and ears of the police.
“Especially during the winter months, when it gets dark earlier, we urge all pedestrians to take extra precautions. Walk in groups whenever possible, stick to well-lit areas and remain alert to your surroundings,” he said.
