Proteas name full-strength squad for crunch matches against Netherlands

The Proteas must win both matches to give themselves a chance of qualifying automatically for the World Cup.


A full-strength 15-man squad has been named by Cricket South Africa for the crucial two-match one-day international (ODI) series against Netherlands later this week.

Seamers Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada return to the 50-over setup after being rested for the recent ODI series against West Indies.

The matches, which form part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, will be contested at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Friday and at the Wanderers on Sunday.

The Proteas must win both matches to give themselves a chance of qualifying automatically for the World Cup in India later this year.

“We have named our strongest possible squad for these games given the importance of these matches in the context of qualifying for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup,” said Proteas limited overs coach Rob Walter.

“We have a job to do and I am confident that with this group of players we can get the job done.”

The national federation’s director of cricket, Enoch Nkwe, added: “Cricket South Africa would like to wish Rob and his team well for the series against Netherlands. The second match of the series will be a special occasion as it marks the annual Pink Day. This is an important day in the CSA calendar as it allows us to raise awareness and funds for an important cause (breast cancer). It’s a game that everyone is looking forward to.”
