Tellytrack appoints Alexander editorial director

Popular South African racing TV presenter Julie Alexander has been appointed Editorial Director at Tellytrack 1, South African horseracing’s television platform on channel 239 DStv.

It’s a brand-new position created by Tellytrack’s new boss Rob Scott. She will be based in studio on busy days, like feature racedays and Saturdays and Sundays, and will oversee and actively direct what appears on screen, and when, during the course of an afternoon.

Explaining the appointment, Scott said: “There’s been a requirement for somebody to co-ordinate between the presenters, in-studio and on-course, and the production staff in order to try and get a balance that meets both punters and purists’ needs.” Alexander was born into horseracing – her father Duncan was one of the leading light-weight jockeys of his era – and, after matriculating, she started her career as public relations and marketing manager in her brother Gary’s stable. She started presenting on Tellytrack in 2004 and has become a familiar face in horseracing.

Alexander (42) said: “It’s an exciting opportunity. I’ll miss the live racing, but think I need the challenge and it’ll be good for my career to branch out into a different avenue. I’m really looking forward to it.

“The production team and presenters have been doing a good job. My role will be taking our show to a world-class level. On the busy days things happen so quickly that it has become essential to have someone in studio with an overview, making second-by-second decisions to make Tellytrack a more cohesive, informative and interesting viewing
experience.

“I know that I will not be able to please all our viewers all of the time, but I’m hoping we’ll end up with the best of both worlds – a good mix that keeps everybody happy enough, especially punters and owners,” she added.

She will still co-present the fortnightly “Turf Talk” magazine show with Grant Knowles, as well as “First Call” once or twice a week.
