LISTEN: Well done Aiden, Temba, Heinrich, but Proteas batting still an issue

In this episode of Talking Point, we discuss the Proteas, the return of the URC and we pick our stars and flops of the week.

The Proteas’ ODI series against the West Indies is one of this week’s big talking points in The Citizen’s weekly sports podcast.

With Heinrich Klaasen to the fore on Tuesday, the SA team beat the West Indies in the third ODI to level the series 1-1 after the first match was rained out.

Though Klaasen and men such as Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma have batted well throughout the West Indies tour of South Africa, the batting department remains a major issue. The Proteas have so far relied too much on one big performance per match.

Next up for the Proteas is the three-match T20 series against the men from the Caribbean, starting Saturday. The other matches are Sunday and Tuesday.

Then it’s the all-important two ODIs against the Netherlands, matches the Proteas must win to give themselves a chance of qualifying automatically for the World Cup in India later this year.

Also in this week’s podcast, hosted by Trevor Cramer and with guests, Jacques van der Westhuyzen, the Head of Sport at The Citizen, and senior writer Ross Roche, we look at the return of the United Rugby Championship this weekend and what the matches mean for the four South African sides, the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers.

Of course, Bafana Bafana are also in action on Friday in the first leg of their Afcon qualifying campaign against Liberia, at Orlando Stadium.

As usual, the panel pick their star performers of the week and those men and women (or organisations) who flopped.

Enjoy.
