Davids admits Pirates have not reached the right level

'If we say we belong in the top four, we must show it through the way we play,' said the Pirates co-head coach.

There is only one objective at Orlando Pirates for co-coaches Fadlu Davids and Mandla Ncikazi – to get the team playing at their best level, something they are not doing at the moment.

The Buccaneers have only registered two wins in their first six league games of the season, leaving them already trailing well behind DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates played to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town Cityon t Saturday at the Cape Town Stadium, allowing the Mother City based club back into the game after taking an early lead

“Pirates are not at the level where everyone expects them. The mandate of the coaches at Pirates is to try to get them where they belong – at the top. If we say we belong in the top four, we must show it through the way we play. Currently, we are not matching our performance to the name that we have. We are not collecting points,” said Davids

“We are slightly behind our target of points. If you calculate after five games, the team that wins the league title in the PSL should have 10 points. We are two points behind schedule. We started our second phase with a draw but we can still make it up … and try to stay with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and the leading pack. We will then be on course. We have not lost hope.”

The focus for the Buccaneers will now be on the Caf Confederation Cup, against Diables Noirs of Congo Brazzaville on the 15th October after the international break.

Against City, it was Happy Jele who gave Pirates the lead, assisted by Vincent Pule’s corner – Pule has had a good start to the season and is in Hugo Broos’ Bafana squad.

City equalised with a second half penalty from another Bafana man, Mdudizi Mdantsane, after defender Olisa Ndah handled inside the box.
