Ex-Pirates midfielder training with Maritzburg

By Thembinkosi Sekgaphane

Sangweni was released by Chippa during the January transfer window to make room for players who will help the club survive relegation.

The former Pirates midfielder joined the Team of Choice four days ago with the hopes of impressing coach Eric Tinkler at training.

Tinkler told Phakaaathi that he knew what the midfielder can bring to the team, but added that he needed time to assess the player.

“Yes he is training with us,” Tinkler told Phakaaathi. “We are still assessing him, we know Thami’s ability, and I also coached him at Chippa. There no doubt about his ability but unfortunate for him he carries a negative past and so he need to prove himself a little bit to us and then will make a decision.”

Sangweni is said to have had a fall out with assistant coach Rulani Mokwena during his stay at Pirates and that was the reason why Bucs sent him out on loan to Chippa.

The former South African junior international struggled to win back his place in the Chilli Boys set up after returning Port Elizabeth and was subsequently axed.
